Tarakeshwar Temple in West Bengal is the main attraction of Tarakeshwar village in Hooghly district. Taraknath Temple dedicated to Lord Taraknath was built in 1729 by Raja Bharmalla. The temple is built in the central West Bengal style of temple architecture with features like "Achala" and "Natmandir". The temple has four terraces above the sanctum sanctorum and wide galleries for congregations of devotees.



History of Tarakeshwar Temple

It is said that one of Lord Shiva's ardent devotees named Vishnu Das traveled from Ayodhya to Tarakeswar. One particular day his brother found a place in the temple where he gave milk to the cows every day. To his surprise he discovered a Shiva Linga at the same place and it is believed that he learned about the Shiva Linga when God himself told him to find the Linga in his dream. And so the villages decided to build a temple in that place.

By Train: There is a railway station called Tarakeswar station which is just a short distance from Howrah station. Regular local trains are available for Tarakeswar station.

By Road: Buses are available to Tarakeshwar from Dharmatala, Howrah, Chinsura bus stand or direct taxis can be taken to reach this place.
