The holy shrine of Amarnathji, or Amarnath Shiv Mandir is located at a distance of about 29 km from Pahalgam at an altitude of about 3,888 meters. Inside the cave is a Shiva Lingam (a linga-like object made of ice), considered by Hindus to be the holiest symbol in the world. A large number of devotees visit it from June to August with a pilgrimage called Amarnath Yatra from Chandanwari. It is considered as one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas or one of the holiest temples in Hinduism. Apart from the blessedness of the Amarnath temple, the surroundings are exceptional.

Amarnath Shiv Mandir can be visited only during Shravan months of July-August. There are two ways to do Amarnath Yatra – via Baltal or Pahalgam. Although the Baltal route is short, it has a steep climb. Pahalgam distance is long but generally preferred by most devotees.

Discovery Of Holy Cave of Amarnath Shiv Mandir

According to an ancient legend, there was once a Muslim shepherd named Buta Malik who was given a bag of charcoal by a sage. At home they discovered that the bag actually contained gold. Excited and surprised, Buta Malik went back to find the monk and thanked him, but at the place where he met him he found a cave, which eventually became a place of pilgrimage for all believers.

 Amarnath Yatra

The trek to the holy cave of Baba Amarnath, which spans a height of about 14,500 feet, is full of adventure and joy. Surrounded by beautiful valleys, mountains, heaven on earth will always feel their presence, the memory of which rarely fades with time.
