Baba Baidyanath Temple, commonly called Baidyanath Dham, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India and is considered the holy abode of Lord Shiva. Located in Degohar district of Jharkhand state, the largest and most impressive temple complex includes the main temple of Baba Bayyanath, where the Jyotirlinga is installed, and twenty one other important and beautiful temples.


Every year millions of devotees visit the Baba Baidyanath Temple during the Shravan Mela. It is particularly impressive because they bring water from the Ganges to the temple at a distance of 108 km at Sultangaj. It is being said that the line of devotees will stretch for 108 kilometers without interruption!

Architecture of Baba Baidyanath Temple

The Baidyanath Temple is shaped like a lotus flower and is 72 feet tall. Both ancient and modern architecture can be seen in the temple. Here Baidyanath faces east. It is believed that Vishwakarma built this temple. Apart from the Baidyanath temple, the temple houses 22 different deities in one compound. This temple consists of three parts. The main temple, the central part of the main temple and the entrance to the main temple. The life of a Shivling is sanctified in the sanctum sanctorum.

History of Baba Baidyanath Temple

According to religious beliefs, the Shiva temple was built by Vishwakarma, the architect of the gods. The temple is divided into three parts: the main temple, the middle part of this main temple and the entrance of the temple. This 72 feet long temple faces east and is shaped like a lotus flower. The top is made of three ascending gold vessels given by Maharaja Raja Puran Singh of Gedhore. Besides these vessels there is a five-bladed 'Punchsula' known as Chandrakanta Mani and an eight-petaled lotus ornament.

Festivals Celebrated at Baba Baidyanath Dham

Maha Shivratri and Shravan Mela are popular festivals celebrated at Baba Baidyanath Temple. During the month of Sawan, many devotees gather at Baba Baidyanath Temple. The temple is open for darshan daily from 4:00 am to 3:30 pm and from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
