Chitai Golu Devta Temple is a very famous and sacred temple that is located near Almora, Uttarakhand. The Temple is popular among tourists and pilgrims from all over the world. People visit this temple to seek justice and happiness from God.

The Temple is situated at a distance of about 10 kilometers from Almora. It is a cultural city in the state of Uttarakhand, India and is known as Dev Bhoomi (Land of Gods).


In the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, Golu is considered to be a historical deity, who is also referred to as Gaur Bhairav or Lord Shiva. This God is worshiped in a number of temples across the state.

This temple was built by a commander of Chand dynasty in 12th century and is a very important place of pilgrimage for many devotees. Inside the temple, you will see a statue of God Golu sitting on a horse holding bow and arrows.

Story Behind Chitai Golu Devta Temple

There are several stories about the origin of the God of Justice. One of the most popular ones says that he was born of a woman called Kalinka who was queen of King Jhal Rai. He was a son of his mother and when he was eight years old, he went to the river and took a wooden horse to drink water.

When the king noticed this, he punished all of the queens and gave him as his son. When the king later heard of the story, he realized that the queens were planning to deceive him.

Another story says that the king was hunting and his servants disturbed a woman who was praying. She was then taunted by the king that she could not separate two fighting bulls. In response to her anger, she separated the bulls and prayed to God.

She was granted a boon of separation and her husband and son were also blessed with health. She is regarded as the mother of God Golu.

Chitai Golu Devta is the God of Justice and is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is regarded as the presiding deity of several temples in Almora and other regions of Uttarakhand. He is worshiped with white clothes, turban and shawl.
